How to Download and Play Pokémon Unbound

Pokémon Unbound uses a patch to create the game from a compatible Pokémon FireRed base file. Follow these steps to find the patch, understand the required files, choose an emulator, and check your game version.

1. Get the Pokémon Unbound Patch

Download the latest patch from the developer’s official Discord announcements (#announcements) or the Pokémon Unbound thread on PokeCommunity.

If the download comes as a ZIP file, extract it first. Look for the .ups patch file, commonly named Pokemon Unbound official.ups, and check the release notes for the latest version.

2. Get the Required FireRed File

Pokémon Unbound requires a compatible Pokémon FireRed (USA, Version 1.0) base game file. It is commonly referenced by the label “1636 Pokémon FireRed Squirrels.”

Make sure the file matches the version specified in the official patch instructions. PokéBoundVerse does not host Pokémon FireRed ROM files.

3. Apply the Patch

Choose a patching tool:

  • Browser: ROM Patcher JS
  • Windows: Floating IPS (Flips) or NUPS
  • Mac: A compatible patching tool

You need the FireRed .gba file and the Unbound .ups patch. Follow the tool’s instructions to apply the patch and create your Pokémon Unbound game file.

4. Open the Game

Choose an emulator for your device:

  • Windows, Mac, Linux: mGBA
  • Android: Pizza Boy or My Boy!
  • iPhone or iPad: Delta

Install the emulator, open your Pokémon Unbound game file, and start playing.

5. Check the Game Version

Launch the game and check the version number on the title screen. Compare it with the latest release from the developers.

If the regular FireRed intro appears, check that you opened the correct game file.

Updating the Game and Keeping Your Save

  • Back up your save: Copy your .sav file before updating.
  • Update the game: Follow the instructions for the new patch version.
  • Missing save? Check that the game and save filenames match and that both are in the expected locations.
  • Save states: These are different from normal in-game saves, so keep a separate backup of your progress.

Common Problems

  • Patch fails: Check that you have the required FireRed version and the correct patch file.
  • FireRed intro appears: Check that you opened the patched game file.
  • Save is missing: Check the .sav filename and save folder.
  • Game crashes: Check the emulator and game version.
  • Clock features don’t work: Check whether your emulator supports the game’s real-time clock (RTC).
