How Legendaries Work in Unbound
📖 The short version
- Almost everything is post-game. Beat the Pokémon League first — that’s when the legendary hunt actually starts.
- Most are static encounters. You walk up to a spot, the legendary appears, and you battle it. One shot — if you knock it out, it’s gone.
- A few roam. Entei, Raikou, Latias/Latios, Thundurus and Tornadus wander the map. You chase them down like the classic roamers.
- Some need missions or items first. Several legendaries only appear after you finish a side mission, get a key item, or meet a condition (day/night, another legendary in your party).
- Five come from Mystery Gift. Genesect, Marshadow, Meltan, Mewtwo and Poipole — check any Pokémon Center.
- Save before every encounter. This is the single most important habit. Save, then talk to / trigger the legendary. If the capture goes wrong, reload.

The Hardest Ones to Get
Most legendaries are walk-up-and-catch. These ones make you work for it:
Regigigas Post-game
You need all three other Regis first — Regirock, Regice and Registeel — in your party when you enter Icy Hole B1F. Catch the trio before you even think about this one.
Landorus & Enamorus
Landorus only shows up in Magnolia Fields if Thundurus and Tornadus are with you. Then Enamorus needs Landorus with you as a special DexNav encounter. It’s a chain — catch them in order.
Suicune
It won’t appear in the Ruins of Void until you’ve caught both Entei and Raikou. Since those two roam, this is really three captures in one.
The roamers Roamers
Entei, Raikou, Latias/Latios, Thundurus and Tornadus flee on the first turn. Use a Pokémon with Shadow Tag or Arena Trap, or one that knows Mean Look, or you’ll be chasing them across Borrius for hours.
Arceus
Deep in the post-game through the Dream Research Lab’s Nightmare area. Long questline, tough fight at the end — save, bring your best team, and stock up on Ultra Balls.
Rayquaza at Crystal Peak — don’t forget the Jade Orb
Legendary FAQ
How many legendary Pokémon are in Unbound?
81 legendaries and mythicals, from Arceus all the way to Zygarde. Almost all of them are post-game.
Can I catch legendaries before beating the League?
A few — Cosmog, Hoopa, Kyurem, Heatran, Kyogre, Type: Null and Magearna are available earlier. The other 70+ need the post-game.
What happens if I knock out a legendary by accident?
It’s gone. Static encounters don’t come back, so always save before you trigger one.
How do I catch the roamers?
Trap them. A Pokémon with Shadow Tag or Arena Trap, or Mean Look on the first turn, stops them fleeing. Then weaken and throw balls like normal.
How do I get the Mystery Gift legendaries?
Walk into any Pokémon Center and check the Mystery Gift option — Genesect, Marshadow, Meltan, Mewtwo and Poipole are waiting there.
What’s the “Portal Purge” mission?
The main post-game questline that opens the Ultra portals. It unlocks most of the Ultra Beasts and box legendaries — Ho-Oh, Lugia, Necrozma, the Tapus and more.
