The Type-Changing Gym Effect
This gym’s special rule: every Pokémon sent into battle changes its type to match the first two moves in its moveset. If your Pokémon’s first two moves are Fire and Dark, it becomes Fire/Dark for the fight. This affects both you and Tessy.
💡 How to use this to your advantage
- Before the fight, reorder your moves so the first two slots give you a good type.
- Grass or Electric as your adapted type is ideal — strong against Water both attacking and defending.
- Avoid adapting into Rock, Ground, or Fire — those make you weaker against her team.
- It also rains during the battle, which powers up all Water-type moves.
Note: the team tables below show each Pokémon’s type after the gym’s adaptation effect — that’s what you’ll actually face.
Gym Puzzle Solution
The gym is a swampy pond with small patches of land. The water is full of steam that clouds your vision — after enough steps it blinds you completely, and if you’re blinded while surfing you’ll get pushed back. The trick: walk on land until your vision clears before each stretch of surfing. Avoid the vines and lily pads shooting out of the water — they block your path and build up steam.

- Step 1: From the entrance, surf straight up to the small patch of land with a trainer. The battle is optional — stay near the edge to skip it.
- Step 2: Head to the patch of land on your right. Another optional trainer battle here — position yourself at the far edge to skip it.
- Step 3: Surf north to the patch of land next to the big tree.
- Step 4: Keep going north to the next small patch with a tree.
- Step 5: Surf toward the top-left of your screen. The steam builds slower here, so you can reach the far patch easily.
- Step 6: Go to the patch of land directly in front of you — Tessy is waiting.

How to Beat Her

Prepare for the type-changing effect before choosing your counters. Reorder your Pokémon’s first two moves so they adapt into a useful typing, with Grass or Electric being strong choices against Tessy’s Water-focused team.
Prepare for Mega Gyarados. It’s her ace on every difficulty below Insane — it mega-evolves the moment it’s sent out and hits very hard. Bring one or two strong Grass-types that can take a hit and strike back; Grass is 4x effective against most of her adapted team.
Handle Toxapex early. She usually leads with Toxapex, which sets Toxic Spikes to poison your team as they switch in, and its Poison Jab can badly poison. Knock it out fast or bring a Poison/Steel-type that’s immune to the spikes.
Watch for the Hyper Potion. Tessy heals a Pokémon with a Hyper Potion when it drops below half HP — plan your damage so you can finish weakened Pokémon in one more hit.
Good catches nearby: Carnivine (Grass, found in Cootes Bog) and Helioptile (Electric/Normal, found in the Safari Zone) are both strong picks against her team.
