In this gym, every type matchup is reversed. Normal-types are normally immune to Ghost — here, they’re weak to Ghost. But the flip works both ways: your Ghost-types are weak to Normal moves in return. The winning trick is to use a non-Ghost Pokémon that knows a Ghost-type move — you deal super-effective damage without taking it back.
The gym puzzle
The gym is a chain of small islands separated by water. You hop across on rocks and lily pads, and ride Lapras stationed by waterfalls to move between areas. Here’s the route:

- Drop through the hole right in front of the entrance.
- Skip the first set of lily pads and walk west to the second set. Hop across to the small island with a trainer — this fight can’t be skipped.
- From there, take the lily pads heading east. Ride the Lapras at the end through the first waterfall.
- Follow the lily pads left to a small island with a trainer. You can run past with good timing, but fighting is safer.
- From that island, hop the lily pad north to the Lapras in front of it.
- Ride it to a plot of land with a bridge — you’ll have to beat the trainer there to cross (not skippable).
- Cross the bridge east, then take the lily pad at the end south to the opposite island.
- Follow the island along, then use the lily pads at the end to ride the Lapras facing south through the waterfall.
- Follow the lily pads east to another Lapras and ride it through the next waterfall.
- This loops you back near Beauty Tamia’s island — take the lily pads left to reach it, then follow the western path until it splits.
- At the split, take the eastern path to the end of the room. A final Lapras takes you through one last waterfall.
- Walk to the center of the island — Mel is waiting.
You’ll fight Picnicker Caitlin, Beauty Tamia, and Beauty Alessia along the way. There’s a Lapras right in front of Mel you can use to pop out and heal at the Pokémon Center before the fight — use it.

How to beat Mel
Use a non-Ghost Pokémon that knows a Ghost-type move. Under the inverse battle rules, Ghost-type moves are super-effective against Mel’s Normal-type Pokémon, while using a non-Ghost Pokémon avoids the usual Ghost-type weakness to Normal attacks. Shadow Ball and Shadow Claw are strong options for this strategy.
Take out Helioptile/Heliolisk first. It’s her fastest and most aggressive Pokémon — Parabolic Charge heals it while it damages you, Razor Wind hits hard, and Volt Switch lets it escape bad matchups. Don’t let it sit on the field.
Miltank stalls. It carries Milk Drink to heal itself (and a Sitrus Berry on higher difficulties), so don’t try to win a slow war of attrition — hit it hard and fast with your Ghost move.
Bring healing. Between Miltank’s Milk Drink and the chip damage from five or six Pokémon, you’ll need Potions or recovery moves to stay in the fight. Remember you can ride the Lapras in front of Mel back to the Pokémon Center if things go wrong — but you’ll have to redo the puzzle path.
On Insane, watch for Mega Kangaskhan — it hits twice per turn and carries Thunder Punch for coverage. A bulky Ghost-move user that can survive one hit is your safest answer.
