The Devolution Gym Effect
Tied to the story of Benjamin’s Butterfree, this gym changes how knockouts work: when a Pokémon’s HP runs out, it devolves one stage instead of fainting.
🌀 How devolution works here
- A knocked-out Pokémon drops back to its previous evolution stage and keeps fighting.
- A devolved Pokémon can’t use moves it learned as its evolved form.
- A Pokémon already at its base stage faints normally — there’s nothing left to devolve into.
- Mega Evolutions count as the normal evolved form, not an extra stage.
What this means for you: fully evolved Pokémon are harder to kill here — you have to knock them out twice. Plan for longer fights and bring Pokémon that hit hard enough to finish devolved targets quickly.
Gym Puzzle Solution
A simple one. At the entrance there are 4 rooms, each with a rock and a button. Press the buttons in the right order and a hidden room opens, leading to Benjamin.
- Step 1: Go into the third room from the left. Press the button on the rock next to the trainer, then head back to the entrance.
- Step 2: Go into the far-left room. Press the button, head back to the entrance.
- Step 3: Go into the far-right room. Beat the trainer there, press the button, head back out.
- Step 4: Go into the second room from the left (the last one you haven’t entered). Press the button and return to the entrance.
- Step 5: The hidden room leading to Benjamin is now open.

How to Beat Him

Facing Benjamin in the Redwood Village Gym
Bring strong Fire coverage for Mega Scizor and Forretress. Mega Scizor is 4× weak to Fire, making a strong Fire-type one of the best answers to Benjamin’s ace, while Rock, Flying, and Ground coverage help handle the rest of his team.
Focus on Mega Scizor. It’s the only real threat — fast, bulky, and it hits hard with priority Bullet Punch after a Swords Dance. As a Bug/Steel-type it’s 4x weak to Fire, so one strong Fire-type (like Emboar) can end it. Benjamin will use a Max Potion on Scizor below half HP, so hit it hard enough to knock it out in as few hits as possible.
Remember the devolution rule. His fully evolved Pokémon need knocking out twice. Don’t waste your strongest moves on a Pokémon that’s about to devolve into something your next attacker handles better — plan your KOs.
Good catches nearby: Mudsdale (Ground) and Tranquill (Normal/Flying), both found in Magnolia Field, match up well against his team.
